New School Books

Today I ordered school books for next year for our two daughters. Our oldest will be starting Kindergarten in the fall but we have already been doing preschool this year and last year. We plan on homeschooling our children.

I always get excited when it comes time to order the new books. I'm not really sure why. It gets more expensive each year. One of the reasons that it got more expensive this year is because I ordered some books for our 2 year old daughter. I just got her an art book that focuses on following directions while coloring and other age appropriate things and a book to help her learn her numbers. The curriculum I use doesn't offer much for 2 year olds but that's okay. A 2 year old doesn't have a very big attention span. Once she starts speaking better I will start to teach her her letters. Right now we're just trying to get her to talk more. She has been doing much better over the last couple of months and she is catching up to other 2 year olds little by little.

Our oldest daughter loves doing her schoolwork. The curriculum I use is fairly advanced. She has been doing K4 work this year and we have been working on word blends so that she can start to read small words. I am actually amazed at what she can learn this young. We're a little behind since I had the baby earlier in the school year and then we got a little more behind when we were all sick for so long but we are trying to catch up. That's the beauty of homeschooling. It's not that hard to catch up. Especially at this age.

I hope that we will be able to continue to homeschool our kids. I was homeschooled from 5th grade through high school and I enjoyed it and thrived. So, we will keep doing this for as long as we feel it is the right thing for our kids and for as long as we feel like it is what God wants us to do.

Are your designing your own curriculum? We're going to do the Virtual Academy, which helps me out a LOT, but also leaves enough flexibility to let us explore the things we want to with him.

For now I am just using the A Beka curriculum but as the kids get older I might mix it up with some other curriculums. I like A Beka because it is fun and colorful for the kids but it is advanced. Our oldest is starting to read small words and she is only 4 years old. I know I wasn't reading at that age. I guess it helps that she is excited about learning to read. :)
